The focus of Operation Good News presently is in India where poor hygiene kills 500,000 children each year. India has approximately 1.1 billion people. Approximately 250 million live on less than $1 per day, and another 700 million live on less than $2 per day.
Two thirds of India's population lives in the rural areas mostly in villages. India has over 500,000 villages. It is in these villages that we find the tribal people, who are the poorest of the poor with severe problems of
inadequate healthcare, lack of financial resources, high levels of illiteracy, and very limited access to social services. Operation Good News is a Christian nonprofit organization which has been reaching out to the world with the love of Jesus since 1993. The outreach to India began by helping to support poor children and the women in a village, with food, shelter, and clothing. The orphanage started with one child, and over the years has grown to up to 35 children who come from seven different surrounding villages.
Currently the number of children in the home fluctuates between 30 and 32 children. Presently these children live in a small one story home with a family who care for them on a daily basis. (Imagine 35 children and a host family living in a house no bigger than 1500 sq. ft). The children sleep on the floor, and eat on the floor. Some of these are genuine orphans, some are abandoned, and the others are from parents who are just too poor to take care of them, so they are brought to the home for help. We support these children as best we can with the basics; food, shelter, clothing, education. We also help them to maintain proper hygiene, and to know that they are loved. Medical and dental care, shoes, and store bought toys, are luxuries to these children.
Sometimes their meal consists of rice and pepper water, because there is no money to buy vegetables or meat. Our goal is to provide the children with a basic medical checkups, basic medication, and first aid items. Part of our immediate vision is to build these children a proper home where they will be provided with beds, tables to eat on, daily nutritious meals, and yearly medical and dental check ups. One of our other goals is to provide transportation such as a van or a bus to transport these children. The generous response of friends to help fund and support these efforts, gives hope to the lives of people in the rest of the world in their quest to escape hardship and poverty, and to achieve a better quality of life.
